Meet the officer team!
MANAGEMENT The Cal Women's Club Soccer Team is an organization within the Cal Recreational Sports Club Office. As a Cal Sports Club, our team is entirely student run and organized. All aspects of the team, including scheduling, fundraising, travel, and organization are coordinated by student club officers. Two captains, two presidents, a fundraising coordinator, travel agent, safety officer, and various other positions are filled each year to keep the team running.
GAMES The Women's Club Team is a member of the WCSA Premier League, which includes all the top teams in California. During the fall, we have two teams: an A Team and a B Team. Our program expanding in Fall of 2016 to include two teams rather than one in order to better include more talented women from the Berkeley community. In addition to fall league, our A Team also attends the NIRSA Regional Tournament in San Luis Obispo and our B Team attends the Santa Barbara Tournament.
Our fall season culminates with the NIRSA Regionals (SLO) and the National Tournament (Pheonix, AZ or Foley, AL). We also the UCLA Tournament.
PRACTICES Mandatory practices are held two to three times a week depending on field availability. Repeated failure to attend practice or inform captains or coaches in advance will result in being removed from the team.
DUES Each semester dues are expected of each player due to the expenses required to be a team which includes our gear, travel expenses, league, and tournaments. If you are unable to pay your dues for personal reasons, please communicate with our finance chairs so we can adjust dues for you.
TRYOUTS Tryouts are held once a year for three days, all of which are mandatory, during the first or second week of school. All returning players are required to tryout; no players automatically make the team. Selection is based on skill, potential, and commitment to show up to the tryout dates. In the spring, interested players are encouraged to come to open practices with the team (these are not held every spring). If many players are interested in joining, a second Spring tryout may be held.
HISTORY The Women's Club Soccer Team was founded in 1995 by a student through the Sports Club program at Cal and our club has been going strong ever since.
We traveled to our first out-of-state tournament in Colorado during our 2002-2003 season, and this was also the first time we attended Nationals. In 2004 we were the West Coast Regional Champions and National Quarter-Finalists. Two years later, in 2006, we reached the Quarter-Finals of Nationals. In 2007, our team placed second in the Open Bracket at Nationals, and went on to suffer a heartbreaking loss in the quarterfinals at Nationals in 2009. In 2010 we fought our way to the Final of the Nationals Open Bracket in Arizona but tragically lost.
The Cal Women's Soccer club went to the National Open Bracket Finals in Fall 2011, placing second just behind Mizzou. We went on to win the 2012 Spring League Cup. In Fall 2012 at Nationals in Memphis, Tennessee, we advanced the farthest in our 17-year history, placing 17th in the nation in the Championship Bracket. Check out our complete 2012 record on the Schedule page.
Since Spring 2016 our team has held the 1st place position in WCSA league; claiming the title for five consecutive seasons. The teams also becoming finalists at the 2017 UCLA Tournament, and qualified for the Elite 8 od the NIRSA Open Bracket at Nationals.
Since being established in 1995 Cal Women's Club Soccer has become a force to be reckoned with in NIRSA club soccer. GO BEARS!
